IHBC’s Council Update: Looking ahead to business on 24 March – first blended Council – with new (& past) Presidents & Vice Presidents, and looking back, on Irish structural engineering CPD ‘across borders’

IHBC’s Council held its 9th online meeting on 21 January, covering Council business – including early notice on our first blended Council on 24 March and an early call for Vice President nominations for up to four posts – alongside our special practice CPD, an informative review of structural engineering projects across Ireland, north and south.

Conservation accredited engineer, Conall Doherty, presented a fascinating series of structural engineering and conservation project case studies from across Ireland. The Wonderful Barn in County Kildare, a unique eccentric conical structure with a cantilevered external staircase and two equally quirky conical dovecotes the challenges of conservation included scaffolding a building which is sometimes concave and sometimes convex and replicating the bonded slate cladding of slates pressed into render. Fort Dunree a coastal defence in County Donegal with a large group abandoned military buildings of varied construction which were stabilised until more funding is available and the conversion of A-block at the Crumlin Road Gaol into McConnell’s Distillery.

IHBC President Mike Brown, in his last full meeting as Chair of Council, offered early notice on the next Council, on 24 March, which will be blended, and broadcast from London’s Charterhouse, and will welcome our Vice President Rebecca Thompson as next President. He also called on nominations for up to four incoming Vice Presidents.

IHBC Vice Presidents: Early Notice on Call for Nominations

Nominees for up to four IHBC Vice President posts are asked to submit to admin@ihbc.org.uk an expression of interest and a description of their vision to taking on this role.
