IHBC Director Sean O’Reilly said: ‘Our IHBC NewsBlog updates regularly review the diverse career opportunities in heritage, conservation and related areas posted on the IHBC Jobs etc service. This round continues to demonstrate the huge variety of roles that employers are looking to us to for help to fill.’
‘IHBC Jobs etc. summaries here typically range widely across sectors, skills, employers, locations and roles, while highlighting their common objective: to secure the person they need, they target IHBC members and their skills, as well as our wide-ranging networks.’
‘In our first Jobs etc. NewsBlog for 2025, not only do we continue the huge variety of roles coming to us to be filled, but it’s as busy and varied as it been in years. It also demonstrates the role the IHBC’s Conservation Cycle model of skills plays in assessing potential’.
Of the current round of posts, the broad scope of skills tied to conservation is evident in the spread of employers, sectors and roles we can highlight first: St Paul’s Cathedral, an historic global icon, which is looking for a Property and Estate Manager, while the Welsh government, through its heritage body Cadw, is – among other posts – calling for a ‘Conservation Works Supervisor’ through our service.
We also see organisations with global conservation responsibilities coming to us, as the Commonwealth War Graves – linked to the intergovernmental organisation of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) – seeks a Technical Surveyor, while at the other end of the scale a smaller charity, the Friends of the Stockton & Darlington Railway, with a useful focus on the business of heritage, is calling for a Business Development Officer.
A comparable spread of disciplines, roles and employers is evident in the range of posts or employers more familiar to regular users of our service, as Historic England seeks an Historic Places Adviser (North East & Yorkshire) and Cadw (again) a Senior Inspector of Historic Buildings, Parks and Gardens. Both of those are linked to central government, while the National Trust’s call for an Architect or Building Surveyor, represents the interest in us of a major national heritage charity.
Our linked employment and accreditation services underpin our quality assurance for Councils as well, even given their increasingly diverse demands for skills and roles. This round sees both senior and early career ‘Assistant’ roles, reaching across a good spread of heritage ‘protection’ and ‘development’ priorities, with Kirklees seeking Senior Conservation Officers and West Berkshire a Principal Conservation and Design Officer, while Oxford City is calling for a Heritage Officer and Cheshire East both a Heritage and Conservation Officer and a Heritage Assistant. To complement those, Manchester City seeks a Career Graded Planner and Sheffield City seeks a Conservation Officer.
Heritage priorities for places of worship and the private sector tends to be set at opposite poles, but not when it comes to the IHBC’s skills sets! With the IHBC especially, these have huge overlaps as they focus on care. So we see in this round from the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich a re-advertising of the post of Historic Church Building Support Officer (HCBSO), the Diocese of Oxford seeking an Assistant Church Buildings Officer and the National Churches Trust seeks a Church Support Administrator. At the same time Smith Jenkins looks to us for a Heritage and Townscape Consultant (Senior or Associate level) and Turley for a Consultant or Senior Consultant, Heritage and Townscape.
This suite of roles offers sound evidence on how our service helps make a real impact on conservation-related matters, regardless of sector, disciple or level. And despite the lower numbers of opportunities than past rounds, all these postings confirm just how cost-effective the IHBC’s Jobs etc service actually is for a sector that is invariably populated by price-sensitive employers.’
‘This suite of postings re-affirms the core public interest priorities that underpin this IHBC service. Individually too, they capture the exceptionally wide spectrum of roles encompassed by the IHBC’s accreditation model, the IHBC’s Conservation Cycle and our IHBC Areas of Competence, and the skills represented there.’
‘To find out more on our accreditation matters, our MATE and related sessions help career-focussed, conservation-conscious practitioners secure IHBC accreditation at minimal cost. These guide members and networks on how to align their skills, knowledge and experience with the IHBC’s own interdisciplinary assessment of conservation competence, a system aligned with national and international conservation practice standards.’
