The IHBC has received a record 50+ submissions to our 2024 Student Awards, all hoping guest judge, Nathan Baker – new Chief Executive (CE) at the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA) – will choose them for the coveted and certificated Award, £500 cash, and a place at IHBC’s 2025 Annual School – #IHBCShrewsbury2025 – on 12-14 June.
IHBC Director Seán O‘Reilly said: ‘On behalf of the IHBC I’d like to thank the many students who have taken the trouble to submit for our celebrated Gus Astley Annual Student Award. Seeing the breadth, depth and diversity of submissions to this award is always both eye-opening and jaw-dropping. And even more so this year as submissions have nearly doubled from our quieter years.’
‘Our 2024 round had to close at the end of September, a month later than usual. Assessment is not easy for anyone when this happens, as evaluation times are even tighter. And with a record submission this year – over 50 – the entire process is even busier’.
‘But I know that our generous guest judge for 2024 – Nathan Baker of the CIfA – and our internal lead on the Awards, Bob Kindred, will do all they can to keep us to schedule, with conclusions due in 2025’s first quarter.’
‘And already we have learned something that may help future arrangements: a closing date in September rather than August might help students too.’
‘For now, we have no plans to change the August closing date for the 2025 round, but if the later date this year is really more useful for students, we will look at that option very carefully’.
