IHBC features ‘Heritage from the (community) doorstep’: Save Waterloo’s Paradise from Lambeth’s ‘largest single office proposal’

The mediaeval tranquillity of South London’s oldest gardens in central London are threatened by a cluster of 6 new tall buildings opposite Big Ben, say opponents who have launched the campaign to ‘Save Waterloo’s Paradise’.

Developers Stanhope have submitted the largest planning application in Lambeth’s history, to build 1.5m sq ft of offices in 6 buildings over 200ft high on sites belonging to St Thomas’ Hospital Trust directly across the river from the Palace of Westminster.

The area immortalised in The Kink’s 1966 classic hit ‘Waterloo Sunset’ already has the UK’s busiest station with 100 million commuters a year, and 30 million people visiting the South Bank, which includes Europe’s largest arts centre.

But the area around Lambeth Palace has some of the quietest and oldest gardens in the capital….

All of this could change with the huge new office blocks….

….with impacts on the Westminster World Heritage site it has already drawn objections from Historic England and the Twentieth Century Society.

The school buildings are now home to an exuberant collection of small businesses in Old Paradise Yard….hosting an open day for the community on 29th October.
