IHBC’s ‘Heritage from the doorstep’: Restoration plans for historic Treffry Viaduct

websitePlans to restore the Treffry Viaduct in Luxulyan Valley have been given a boost, says The Cornish Times, thanks to a grant of £55,968 from Historic England towards investigatory works.

The Cornish Times writes:

Cornwall Heritage Trust, who acquired the Scheduled Monument from the Treffry family in 1989, will be appointing architects to oversee the works which will determine the scope of future renovation projects on the structure.

John Smith, vice chairman of the Trust explained: ‘Over the years the water leaking from the aqueduct channel has washed the mortar from the masonry joints and the effects of this will be investigated. The research will also determine whether the piers are solid or whether they have a hollow core. A number of granite sleepers will be lifted and probes used to identify the presence of voids. A trial cleaning exercise will also be carried out to remove the staining from the leaks.’

The Trust anticipates work will take place during Summer 2019.
