The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has called on the Government to ensure that the quality of the built environment does not suffer as a result of the decision to withdraw funding from CABE.
RIBA President Ruth Reed said:
‘We are still waiting for a final decision on the future of CABE, but it should be acknowledged that they have done a huge amount of good work over the past decade to improve the quality of the built environment, and champion good design across Government. It is important that crucial functions on national design review, and enabling work with local authorities is not lost, and we hope the Government will look carefully at how this may now be delivered.
The Government’s priority of localism will make this particularly important. Local authorities will need the appropriate support to be able to make informed decisions on design issues and the Government will need to ensure that the proposed changes to the planning system recognise the importance of good design by providing incentives and removing barriers. We look forward to working closely with the Government over the coming months to ensure that this happens.’
