The Western Telegraph reports on how, if you ever wanted to own a piece of British military history, Pembroke Dock’s Defensible Barracks – one of ‘west Wales’ most iconic buildings’ – is a real opportunity as it has been put up for sale.

The grade II listed fort was built in the Victorian period to provide defence for the Royal Dockyard. Sitting on the crest of Barrack Hill, the Defensible Barracks has extensive views over the town and the Milford Haven waterway. In 2009 the barracks was declared the second most endangered Victorian or Edwardian building in Britain.
With planning permission for commercial development, the property has permission for a 56 bedroom hotel and for a coffee shop in the northeast battlement. For £1,200,000 you get a property that sits on almost 4 and a half acres of land, with some gardens that ‘have been landscaped to a fantastic standard.’
Partly redeveloped, a portion of the property has been converted into modern apartments…
The barracks are said to have cost £75,000 to build, following the ‘Star Fort’ design initially proposed by Leonardo Da Vinci and is believed to be the last fortress built on this principle in Europe. The sale of the barracks follows the recent listing of the historic Stack Rock Island near Milford Haven, which was put up for sale for £400,000.
