Communications agency ‘Built Environment Communications Group’ (becg) has launched new BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnicities) and LGBT+ initiatives.

Driving up sector-wide diversity is on the agenda for the UK’s largest Built Environment specialist communications agency becg. The company is taking a lead by championing and supporting its staff in setting up independent initiatives to provide platforms for under-represented BAME and LGBT+ communities working within the sector.
Leading the way in addressing the ethnicity deficit across the Built Environment, becg Account Manager Priya Shah has initiated and launched BAME in Property; a networking group for BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnicities) and non-BAME professionals in the Property and Planning sectors.
BAME in Property aims to increase ethnic diversity in the Built Environment sectors. Through engaging discussions, roundtables and networking events, the core aim of the group is to promote inclusivity by bringing together and encouraging BAME and non-BAME people to champion their professional activity and achievements. Ultimately, the group will help break down barriers and attract new talent to the sector, making it more attainable for people from diverse backgrounds.
Speaking on the launch of BAME in Property, Priya said: ‘I decided to set up BAME in Property after reading that only 1.2 percent of the Built Environment sector was from a BAME background, and seeing that a networking group of its sort did not already exist. I took inspiration from other sectors where similar groups had been set up and spoke to other people in the industry who all gave valuable feedback on how to develop the group. Ultimately, my aim has been and always will be about creating a more ethnically diverse industry as people naturally become more attracted to working in an industry that is more representative of themselves. I am excited to see this group develop over the next year.’
Alongside this focus on ethnicity, becg also supported a networking event hosted by Planning Out, a recently established group for LGBT+ planners, which aims to raise awareness of the importance of equality for all in the sector, regardless of their sexual orientation. becg’s sponsorship of Planning Out was initiated and led by Senior Account Manager, Christopher Ricôt, who was delighted that becg was eager to play its part in promoting acceptance and inclusivity across the Built Environment sector….
