Recent and forthcoming Historic England (HE) support are flagged in the January Planning Bulletin, including the new edition of Good Practice Advice Note (GPA) 3, ‘The Setting of Heritage Assets’, and links to a sector-accessible webinar on its ‘Conservation Principles’, under consultation, on 22 January.
Richard Morrice of HE writes on the publications as follows:
Please note that this new second edition of GPA3 formally replaces the first edition (2015) which has now been archived, as has the former Historic England advice on views (which was contained in Seeing the History in the View, 2011). The main thrust of the revision is to clarify the relationship between setting and views, particularly to make clear that the heritage interest in views is a matter of the contribution of views to the significance of heritage assets, and in allowing that significance to be appreciated.
HE writes of the ‘Conservation Principles’ webinar:
Colleagues from across the Heritage Conservation communities are invited to participate in a webinar on the proposed changes to Conservation Principles for the Sustainable Management of the Historic Environment.
This webinar, run by Duncan McCallum and Andy Brown who have been very involved in the drafting, will cover:
(a) Why change the 2008 Conservation Principles document?
(b) What is being proposed in the revised draft?
(c) What are the main issues arising from the proposed changes?

- A revised edition of HEAN 1: Conservation Areas: Designation, Appraisal and Review will be published shortly for consultation.
- An updated version of Conservation Principles has also been issued for consultation (closing date 2 February).
