Following our Parliamentary Commitments in 2025, the IHBC asks members, contacts and networks across UK Local Government (LG) conservation services for ‘advice, input and suggestions’ from Conservation Service Officers’ in Local Government, so we can call on UK governments to help make these ‘services better for users, as well as for Officers and advisers’.
| IF YOU ARE A CONSERVATION SERVICE OFFICER, ADVISER OR PROVIDER FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT, PLEASE HELP US: If you offer advice on conservation matters in local government please complete the form linked below. If you know of anyone who offers advice on conservation matters in local government please forward this message to them so they can complete the form. COMPLETE THE FORM SEE THE CALL |
The IHBC Officers write:
The IHBC wants to support our local government conservation services by offering some useful suggestions for improvements to governments across the UK, to help both service users and local government conservation officers and advisers. So we need your advice, input and suggestions!
We plan to promote these services, and their potential, to the highest levels of UK governments.
We want to call for changes that can support you in making these services better for users, as well as for Officers and advisers.
The most helpful ideas for now will be practical, cost-conscious and manageable, but we are open to ALL suggestions.
We need your proposals and suggestions to help us help you, and help conservation.
Remember:
- The survey is open to all who offer advice on behalf of local government conservation services.
- The form is short and quick to fill, so please do send us your thoughts: that input is essential!
- The survey is confidential and may be completed anonymously.
- We will follow up on findings in the late Summer, before presenting to a Preliminary Briefing in Westminster in the Autumn.
- This is a short, scoping survey with an initial formal deadline of July 10, 2026.
As this initiative will continue, the survey will remain open to contributions.
Your input and thoughts are very much appreciated.
If you have any queries please email Sarah Homer at support@ihbc.org.uk
CONTEXT:
- The IHBC launched this initiative in October 2025 with a briefing in Westminster outlined HERE, linked to our 3rd Commitment, to ‘Investigate the complex challenges in heritage management processes and skills…’
- We continued the discussion by targeting this most critical and threatened part of conservation care, the UK’s conservation services in local government.
- We first explored issues and ideas in our members-only Council on 8 April 2026, with initial outcomes reported HERE.
- This survey marks the next stage, as we seek suggestions for better services from the ‘coal face’ of conservation, possibly the very first time this has been raised in a UK-wide survey.
