Help IHBC help HERs

The IHBC is developing recommendations for Historic Environment Records (HERS) on the incorporation of national information on the built environment and would like to hear about any research on HER and conservation service links.

Fiona Newton, IHBC Projects Officer said ‘We are looking at existing work identifying building related priorities which has been carried out in consultation between HERs and Conservation Officers to identify priorities.  Anyone who has such information and has been involved in drawing up lists of priorities is asked to contact us if they have not already been in touch’.

The IHBC is currently involved in one of the English Heritage’s HER21 projects.  The HER21 scheme aims to develop pilots and case studies to:

– explore and demonstrate new methods of integrating the full range of historic environment data into HERs
– to forge effective links with relevant data sources held outside those HERs, and
– to explore the challenges and opportunities presented by increased on-line public accessibility to HER data.

The IHBC’s project examines which data sources would be of most use to the conservation users of developing HERS and, following that, assess this list of possible data to discover which information can be most rapidly included in HERS. From then it will take these priorities and go on to examine the range of historic built environment national data sources and look at how and if these can be incorporated in some way into sub regional and local HERs and indicate the planning benefits arising from their inclusion.
