Inspiration from the projects supported by the Cultural Protection Fund 

British Council website 280717Following the launch in June 2016, the Cultural Protection Fund is now supporting 19 projects working in conflict-affected countries across the Middle East and North Africa.

The British Council writes:

These organisations are building skills so that local experts can protect their own cultural assets for future generations; ensuring that sites under threat are documented, conserved and restored; and helping local people to identify and value cultural heritage….

Protecting Bedouin Lived Cultural Heritage
This 15 month intergenerational project will focus on the nomadic Bedouin communities of the Occupied-Palestinian Territories.

Documenting and Protecting Heritage at Rum Kale
A project to undertake recording and prepare management plans for the fortified archaeological site of Rum Kale, an area that is highly affected by the conflict in Syria.

Cultural and natural heritage
A project to rehabilitate an ancient spring and its associated square, part of the Palestinian World Heritage Site ‘Land of Olives and Vines’.

Preserving Yazidi heritage and identity
This project will engage young Yazidis, and provide them with the relevant training to support them to engage with, record and share their cultural heritage.

Digital documentation of the Qsar es-Said Palace
This digital documentation project will provide a 3D educational model of a historically important palace in Tunis, which has been closed for the last 50 years.

Heritage skills for peace and capacity building
This three year project focuses on the documentation and protection of two cities of historical and architectural value in south-east Turkey.

Preserving Syrian Heritage
This project aims to train Syrians in digital documentation techniques in order to digitally document heritage sites at risk.

Integrating Soqotra’s cultural heritage into conservation
This 30 month project will address the needs of cultural heritage on Soqotra, a Yemeni archipelago between Yemen and the Horn of Africa.

Enhancing vernacular heritage in As-Samou’
This two year project focuses on the documentation, conservation and adaptive re-use of vernacular built heritage to address severe conflict damage in As-Samou’.

Syrian Stone Masonry
This project will provide a group of Syrian and Jordanian trainees with traditional stonemasonry skills that can be used to repair conflict-affected heritage buildings.

Safeguarding Archaeological Assets of Turkey
This project aims to build capacity and raise awareness for safeguarding archaeological assets in Turkey, in particular those in south-eastern provinces.
