Civic Voice has a variety of workshops and events available throughout England to help members prepare for Civic Day on June 17, as part of a national celebration that includes the IHBC-linked celebration of 50 years of Conservation Areas.
In Civic Voice Director Ian Harvey’s blog for the National Trust he writes: ‘… 50 years after the father of the conservation movement, Lord Duncan Sandys, implemented the Civic Amenities Act, the comment is as relevant today as it was then.
This Saturday, 17th June, is National Civic Day, a day to celebrate where you live and what makes it special for you. This year we’re focusing on conservation areas to ensure that in 50 years’ time, Lord Duncan Sandys’ legacy will live on.
Civic Voice writes:
Civic Day is the national celebration of civic pride. Each year communities across the country hold events to celebrate their area. Last year there were over 150 Civic Day events which ranged from litter picks to street parties to sponsored walks. Civic Voice wants to make Civic Day the greatest we have ever held.
Although the co-ordinating work is done by Civic Voice, what really makes this event happen is the fantastic effort of thousands of volunteers. These people give guided tours, put on exhibitions, arrange street parties, organise competitions and help visitors understand the area they live in just a little bit more. The first ever Civic Day was held on June 25th, 2011 and involved over 200 community groups across England who put on over 350 events to celebrate where they live. Since then over 1000 community events have been held across England making Civic Day a truly national event.
This year Civic Day was launched in the Houses of Parliament with the help of Civic Day 2016 award winners and their local MPs. Civic Voice have also developed a Civic Day Toolkit to help you with your plans, which you can download and they have a special focus on celebrating conservation areas.
Everyone who enters their Civic Day plans to Civic Voice will be automatically entered into our Civic Day Awards and will be in with a chance of winning an award at the Civic Voice Annual Convention in Wakefield. Winners will also be invited to the Civic Day launch event in Parliament later this year.
