A new Note from the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), developed jointly with ChurchCare, addresses the issues surrounding the appropriate care of historic floors.
Recognising the increasing number of applications for alterations to listed places of worship that include the partial or complete replacement of an existing floor, SPAB and the Church Buildings Council have issued some general guidance about the care and maintenance of old floors and the issues that should be considered when a congregation is thinking of altering or replacing a floor.
The document provides advice on areas such as why floors are important, understanding an historic floor, maintenance and repair of different types of historic floors and re-laying an historic floor.
The guidance aims to raise the profile of historic floors in church buildings and was part of SPAB’s Floors Campaign, which ran in the summer of 2016.
