King’s Cross GII listed Gasholder No 8 wins lighting award

The Grade II listed structure at King’s Cross in London has won the Best Lighting Scheme at the FX Awards.

The gasholder is the largest in the area and has undergone a major offsite restoration. The frame now contains a new public ‘pocket’ park and event space designed by Bell Phillips Architects. The lighting design by Spiers + Major aims to make park users feel safe and secure as natural light fades, and provide a lighting ‘experience’ inspired by the idea of a solar eclipse.

The gasholder was decommissioned in 2000 and resurrected in 2013 as part of the King’s Cross redevelopment. It is 25m high and 35m in diameter with 16 hollow cylindrical cast iron columns.
