A collective memorial of place, recorded through virtual reality, from UCL developers

Developers at University College London (UCL) are using software to record and combine the past, present and future architectures of the city, with the first project recording the stories of local residents, some of whom will lose their homes, communities and workplaces as High Speed 2 progresses.

‘The palimpsest’ initiative (named after the idea that single documents can contain different texts that are hidden or partially removed) uses 3D scanning and virtual reality to build collective memories of places and communities that might be lost through redevelopment or construction.

The first project has used the High Speed Rail 2 line, which plans to run through the Borough of Camden in London, and has recorded the stories of local residents, some of whom will lose their homes, communities and workplaces.
