English Heritage is running a web based survey as part of consultation on the National Heritage Protection Plan (NHPP), which will govern a substantial part of the work that English Heritage undertakes to protect the nation’s heritage, with the survey running until 30 June.
The NHPP is also intended as a basis for developing a more co-ordinated and collaborative approach to protection on the part of the whole heritage sector. This will not be the only opportunity for the sector to comment, as English Heritage hopes that the published Plan will itself elicit comments and advice, and shall ensure that each annual revision of the Plan is influenced by further consultation.
In summary:
EH’s Strategy for 2010 – 2015 is to be published in autumn 2010 and includes the following draft high-level aims:
* AIM 1:Identify and protect nationally important heritage
* AIM 2:Champion England’s heritage
* AIM 3:Support owners, local authorities and voluntary organisations to look after England’s heritage
* AIM 4:Help people appreciate and enjoy England’s heritage
* AIM 5:Achieve excellence, openness and efficiency in all we do
The Heritage Protection Reform Programme, while continuing to implement the White Paper proposals and work towards reformed Heritage Protection legislation, also continues, through training and pioneering new ways of working, to foster the cultural, intellectual and procedural changes that will enable the Plan to operate effectively; they are complementary activities.
Identification and articulation of significance under the NHPP will be increasingly supported by EH’s research capacity. Whilst we will continue to need an overarching corporate Research Strategy, our research effort will be increasingly directed by the needs of the Plan and our other statutory responsibilities.
