BEFS, Scotland’s umbrella organisation for built and historic environment organisations, has received new core funding from Historic Scotland, to extend and develop its intermediary functions. This follows a year of cross-sector consultation and planning on how to best to support the management and development Scotland’s places. The grant will support BEFS development as intermediary body.

Robin Burley, Chairman of BEFS said: “We are delighted with the Minister’s announcement of Historic Scotland’s support which is fantastic encouragement and an endorsement of the work of our members. Our plan is for BEFS to grow into a strong and coherent force for celebrating and improving Scotland’s places by representing historic and built environment interests nationwide. My first priority is now the recruitment of a Director and this funding package will ensure a great deal of interest in an opportunity which will make a real difference to the heritage we leave for future generations to enjoy.”

Terry Levinthal, Director, Conservation Services & Project, NTS comments: “The National Trust for Scotland warmly welcomes the enhanced support from Historic Scotland for BEFS. The influence that the built environment has on sustainable development and social well-being cannot be understated. At a time when Scotland is thinking about its future direction, BEFS has an important role to play in achieving central and local government aims for the care of the historic and built environment, and in supporting local activity and action.”

Dr Seán O’Reilly, Director of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC) adds: “Joining up the many stakeholders in Scotland’s places is the best way to improve quality in the planning system without slowing it down. BEFS, with its diverse membership, is perfectly positioned to secure the cost-effective economies in communication and networking needed to secure genuine sustainable development in Scotland.”
