IHBC welcomes EH’s ‘HER21’ funding

IHBC Director, Seán O’Reilly, welcomed English Heritage’s new funding programme, ‘Developing Historic Environment Records for the 21st Century’, for the contribution it will make to modernising conservation processes in planning.

Seán O’Reilly said: “We’re delighted that this significant block of research funding – some £400,000 – is directed specifically towards the modernisation of Historic Environment Records.  We’ve partnered in shaping this programme, and we’d encourage anyone to explore how their work on information, records, buildings and history might be helped by this opportunity.

We hope that this money will help transform a too-little known specialist tool into a key resource for all stakeholders involved in planning and conservation issues.  Equally, we’re keen to help make sure that as wide a constituency as possible participates in this programme, but it’s a tight timescale and, for many prospective applicants, an unknown funding programme.  So be sure to let your colleagues know about this, and to explore options and partnerships as far as possible to help resolve any hurdles.”

English Heritage writes:
‘As of 15th February 2010 English Heritage opened this new scheme within its Historic Environment Enabling Programme, making available, in 2010/11, a total of £400,000 towards research and development into Historic Environment Records (HERs), to help owners and users bring HERs into line with planned Heritage Protection Reform.

However, the majority of the funding will be available as grants accessed via applications to the Historic Environment Enabling Programme. The details can be found in the HER21 Scheme document.

The grants scheme is for one year only and all projects must be complete by
March 15th 2011.

Please read the Scheme details carefully if you are considering an application. Please also ensure you are familiar with EH Project Management Guidance (www.english-heritage.org.uk/MoRPHE) and HEEP Guidance for Applicants.

We will issue tenders for some of this work. These will be posted as appropriate on http://englishheritage.g2b.info/ We look forward to receiving your applications.’
