IHBC members with benefits: ‘3 only’ subsidised places on Oxford ‘Anglican Churches’ course

The IHBC is offering the opportunity of up to three subsidised places to the IHBC-sponsored University of Oxford Department of Continuing Education ‘Anglican Churches’ short course, to be held on 22 and 23 May.

A £50 reduction in the course fees is available for the course, for up to three IHBC members only, on a ‘first-come’ basis.  The course offers an excellent introduction to the exploration to assessing significance of church buildings, which includes a mixture of classroom based activities and site visits to contextualise the learning.

The University of Oxford Department of Continuing Education writes:
The course aims to develop the knowledge of volunteers and others about church architecture, and to increase their confidence and skills in understanding the significance of church buildings and presenting them to the wider public.

Classroom sessions will introduce the historical development of church architecture and decoration, its terminology and its historical and religious context.  A classroom session will introduce the concept of significance as it relates to evaluating proposals for change to historic buildings, and introduce the concepts of Statements of Significance and Need There will be two or three visits to church buildings in Oxford to look at real examples, and to undertake a practical exercise in describing the significance of a church or chapel There will be one or two sessions on presentational skills and how to make church buildings welcoming and interesting for visitors.

By the end of the course, participants will be expected to: Have a broad understanding of the development of church architecture, furnishings and decoration over time, the major stylistic changes and their chronology, and how and why views on church architecture and decoration have changed. Have access to further information on these topics in the form of reading lists, glossaries etc Understand how the concept of significance is used to evaluate proposals for change to church buildings and what significance means in this context. Have had an opportunity to think about and discuss what makes churches welcoming and interesting for visitors, and good ways of presenting information visually, orally and in writing.
