Missing the IHBC’s 2018 School? Don’t forget – Money is not the barrier as bursaries are still available!
Bursary places (mainly for the Day School) are still available for the IHBC’s 2018 School in Belfast on 21-23 June, themed on ‘Our Shared Heritage’ and offering some of the best heritage learning and CPD around: up to 9 hours for the Day School and AGM and up to 24 hours over the 3-day Full School, including networking.

The IHBC is continually improving Continuing Professional Development (CPD) support at our Annual Schools, and for 2018 members can already assess projected skills and themes using a pilot CPD matrix suite – to promote School attendance and benefits to employers and sponsors – and now, whether there or not, new online CPD resources on our Day School ‘Speakers’ webpages mean everyone can boost their IHBC CPD through the School.

IHBC Annual School’s ‘Sharing’ theme shared with Ireland’s national heritage week of ‘stories’ – 18 to Sunday, 26 August, 2018
As part of the 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage, over the last week of August, national and local organisations across Ireland will host heritage-related events that follow the ‘shared heritage’ topic of the IHBC’s 2018 Belfast School, also a 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage event, with the theme of ‘sharing stories’.

UK residents can help ‘destress’ cities by mapping quiet spots
An online mapping survey, ‘DeStress’, has been launched by university researchers working to mitigate the negative impact environmental noise has on city dwellers’ health and wellbeing by identifying and preserving places with positive soundscapes.

Missing the IHBC’s 2018 School? … ‘Not’ a 2018 IHBC School prelude, but keynote Jukka Jokilehto outlines the origins of the 1993 ICOMOS Guidelines
Though not the formal topic for the afternoon’s keynote speaker at the IHBC’s 2018 Belfast School, Professor Jukka Jokilehto offers NewsBlog readers his first-hand knowledge of the background to the 1993 ICOMOS Guidelines on conservation training, drafted following an informal query from IHBC Director Seán O’Reilly about the origins of this key standard in conservation practice.

IHBC responds to NPPF consultation: Calls time on insubstantial distinctions in levels of ‘substantial harm’, seeks new settings policies, and more….
In its response to the revised National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) the IHBC has urged government to call time on ‘substantial harm’ and ‘less than substantial harm’; to develop policies for setting, and to celebrate the differences between heritage types.

IHBC’s ‘Heritage from the doorstep’: Centuries-old worker’s graffiti uncovered in renovations at Wentworth Woodhouse
Centuries-old worker’s graffiti and handprints from craftsmen dating back more than 200 years have been uncovered by specialists examining the roof before the replacement of 14,000 tiles begins as part of the renovation work at Wentworth Woodhouse.

Interim Raynsford Review report now out: Final consultation on 9 ‘propositions’ continues to 29 June
The Raynsford Review of Planning, set up to identify how the government can reform the English planning system to make it ‘fairer, better resourced and capable of producing quality outcomes, while still encouraging the production of new homes’, has issued its interim report, with the review team seeking a final round of feedback on Report’s 9 propositions by Friday 29 June.

IHBC Chair James Caird sat at the top table, with Vice Chair Kathy Davies among the delegates, to add IHBC perspectives to the recent Civic Voice-hosted All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Civic Societies meeting on 8 May, to ‘discuss the future of the nation’s 512 at risk conservation areas at risk’ following the publication of new research entitled ‘The Future of our Conservation Areas’.
