‘Modernisation’ impacts on the ‘oldest surviving mainline station in the world’

Network Rail’s modernisation plans affecting the historic setting of Liverpool Road railway station in Manchester are being opposed by heritage interests including English Heritage as it leads opposition to the proposed Ordsall Chord scheme over concerns the structure and layout will cause ‘substantial harm’ to the Grade 1 listed Stephenson’s Bridge and historic station complex.
