Basement wars in Westminster

Huge basement extensions could be refused under a new planning policy now under consultation by Westminster City Council.

Basements extensions of more than one storey and over 50 per cent of a property’s garden size will be recommended for planning refusal under these changes.

Westminster has seen a three-year boom in applications for basement extensions.

Particular problem areas are Belgravia, Knightsbridge, Marylebone, Mayfair and St John’s Wood. Some basements have as many as three stories and their construction can cause huge problems for neighbours.
