The Welsh Government has commissioned planning consultants and urban designers Powell Dobson Urbanists to lead research into the effectiveness of Design and Access Statements (DAS).
The research is being carried out in collaboration with Cardiff University School of Planning and Geography and Berkshire-based Keith Bright Consultants.
This initiative comes in the wake of consultation on the Welsh Government’s Framework for Action on Independent Living. A key priority of the framework is a review of DAS as a tool for achieving accessibility, including how DAS sits alongside Building Regulation access requirements.
The research will look at various aspects of DAS requirements, including: how they shape the design process; their interpretation and whether there are other aspects of the regulation or development process that might achieve the same aims as DAS.
