ICOMOS, ICCROM and IUCN are inviting World Heritage site managers and heritage professionals to participate in an international consultation, to be held on 10 June 2026, focused on the development and revision of management plans for World Heritage sites.
ICOMOS writes:
The online consultation forms part of a broader initiative aimed at improving management frameworks for cultural, natural and mixed heritage sites facing increasingly complex environmental, social and governance challenges. The discussions will contribute to the preparation of future guidance dedicated to effective World Heritage management planning. The initiative reflects the growing importance of management systems within international heritage policy. Particular emphasis is now being placed on integrated governance models, sustainable development objectives and community participation in heritage decision-making processes.
It is scheduled on 10 June 2026, from 12:00 to 14:00 (CET).
Participants will be invited to discuss:
- challenges encountered during the preparation of management plans;
- governance and stakeholder coordination;
- participatory approaches involving local communities;
- tools and methodologies currently used in the field;
- examples of successful management practices and adaptive strategies.
The consultation also aligns with the objectives of the World Heritage Leadership programme, jointly coordinated by ICCROM and IUCN, which promotes capacity-building and knowledge-sharing among heritage professionals worldwide.
Who can apply
Are particularly encouraged applications from managers of World Heritage properties who:
- do not yet have a management plan;
- have outdated or incomplete management plans;
- are currently developing or revising a management plan or similar planning instrument.
While this consultation is primarily intended for those working with World Heritage properties, professionals involved in the management of other heritage places, and other protected and conserved areas, can also participate.
Applications are open until 5 June 2026, and selected participants will contribute directly to shaping future recommendations on World Heritage management planning. If you experience any issue with submitting your application please contact whl[at]iccrom.org.
