Capita takes over Tyneside planning service

North Tyneside Council has agreed a deal with consultancy Capita Symonds that will involve the contractor running elements of the council’s planning service for the next 15 years.

Capita Symonds has announced that it has been selected as preferred bidder by North Tyneside Council to provide wide-ranging planning, property, highways and maintenance services in a partnership designed to deliver both cost savings and improved services to citizens.

The core contract is expected to be worth approximately £152m over 15 years. The services, delivered in partnership with the council, would include highways engineering, traffic and transportation planning, properties and facilities management, planning and building control, consumer protection and environmental health services.

The partnership will see the transfer of 335 council staff to Capita Symonds, and a further 58 full-time equivalent employees will be seconded to enable the council to fulfill its statutory duties for planning, environmental health and licensing.
