Please do join us at our next virtual IHBC Council, on Wednesday 8 April from c.4.30pm for more of our exclusive, unique and member-led Council CPD.
This Council sees the opening of our response to the 3rd of our Parliamentary ‘5 Commitments to Help Heritage Skills in Conservation…’ presented in Westminster last November. It opens our ‘investigation’ of heritage management in regulatory contexts, starting with a light-touch scoping of issues around local Conservation Officers and Services across the UK. Some 5 or so short, member-led presentations on topical issues will frame our initial planning and future investigations, all also informed by your contributions online and apart.
For this April Council too there are even more opportunities for updates, queries and discussions. As members, you can help shape the debate and content in advance through the ‘Suggestions Form’ linked below, as we call on you to tell us what you want to hear about or explore, whether as advice, thoughts or guidance, both for this Council and for the future!
Do remember too that our Council is the IHBC’s advisory and training forum, open exclusively to IHBC members of any category. As such, Councils offer you the opportunity to raise matters from the floor – virtual or otherwise – so you can help shape our future activities and plans as well to plan your own professional development, including especially in voluntary roles with us, as outlined in our NewsBlog call Here.
Future Councils will continue to build on our distinctive approach to CPD for the Conservation Professional, supporting practice alongside updates and debate on current sector and IHBC issues.

The IHBC writes:
IHBC’s Council is an evolving but critical body in the IHBC’s governance. It was formally launched in 2021 following the adoption of new IHBC Articles of Association in December 2020 and after extensive piloting from 2015.
Council serves as the inclusive and representative body for all IHBC members, of all categories. It encourages volunteers to get actively engaged with the IHBC’s UK-wide operations and agendas, with opportunities to gain knowledge through proactive learning and professional development, while also helping advance the IHBC’s own work.
Council operates using an experimental, flexible format that can test and explore new models of engagement between ALL our practitioners and stakeholders and the corporate body of the IHBC itself: the registered company and charity.
This way, Council aims to serve as an inclusive and representative assembly, and as an informal advisory body to the Board of Trustees.
All IHBC members are encouraged to attend Council
Participation in Council is regarded as suitable preparation and learning for more senior voluntary posts in the IHBC, in particular as Trustees and Committee Chairs.
Branch Committees should ensure they are formally represented at Council on a formal basis, with up to two formal representatives for each Council noted to the IHBC’s National Office through our Branch Liaison Officer, at support@ihbc.org.uk.
