IHBC: full conservation course recognition for BCC & Kingston

IHBC has announced its formal recognition, for IHBC membership applications, of conservation course progammes offered under Kingston University London: the linked BA and MSc postgraduate course and, for graduates, the Foundation Degree Course at the Building Crafts College (BCC), Stratford.

Graham Lee, Foundation Degree Course Director at the Building Crafts College said: ‘The Building Crafts College and Kingston University are delighted the specialist historic building conservation courses at Foundation Degree and Masters run by the two organisations have been recognised as suitable to meet the membership application requirements of IHBC. A few places remain available on the Foundation Course for start this September and anyone interested should contact me direct’.

IHBC Director Seán O’Reilly said: ‘IHBC’s course assessment programme offers ‘Full recognition’ to courses that map to our membership accreditation standards. It means that an person who has successfully completed the course needs only 2 years of professional experience to apply for full accredited membership.

‘Full recognition can serve as an important ‘fast-tracking’ for those applying for full membership, but it also ensures that the courses effectively balance the IHBC’s conservation priorities: the international standard in conservation represented by the ICOMOS guidelines on conservation training, and the World Bank model for environment project management. Of course applicants also must satisfy our membership requirements before Full Member status is offered.’

‘We also pride ourselves in responding to the diverse pressures and opportunities for a new generation of conservation professionals. The Building Crafts College Foundation Course is especially interesting, as it is open to non-graduates as well as graduates. To ensure it’s compatibility with our specific needs, it only operates under the terms of ‘full recognition’ where attached an appropriate graduate or equivalent qualification, such as a suitable vocational qualification.’
