The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) is recruiting individuals from a diverse range of science, engineering, and industrial backgrounds for its first ever College of Experts, ‘a list of pre-approved experts from whom MHCLG can commission short pieces of ad hoc work under contract…’.

MHCLG writes:

  • Range of independent experts to be recruited to help inform future policy in areas such as planning, building safety and homelessness
  • The new College of Experts will be made up of members from a range of science, engineering, and industrial backgrounds
  • Members will ensure policies are thoroughly stress tested and fit for purpose

The Ministry for Housing, Communities, and Local Government is recruiting individuals from a diverse range of science, engineering, and industrial backgrounds to join its first ever College of Experts. The body will help inform future policies using valuable expert knowledge, supporting the department’s central role in delivering the government’s Plan for Change.

This enhanced access to specialist advice and guidance, will ensure the department can better deliver for the British public – stress testing new policies to make them more resilient to current and future challenges. This is in line with other government departments, such as the Department for Transport and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport, who have had experts in these positions for several years.

Applicants will be available to help advise on complex issues such as planning policy, building safety, homelessness and issues facing local government. The department will use a pool of successful candidates to recruit into short-term, temporary project-based work where expertise is most needed.

Once recruited, the department will then be able to commission work under contract to provide an in-depth technical view which will help ensure the decisions taken are ones which benefit the country and respond to the challenges we face.

Full details of the role and the application can be found on BeApplied. The application window will be open for a month, with roles expected to be appointed in the Spring.

Once finalised, the department will publish a list of the successful applicants. Positions will be initially awarded for a year, with the option to extend as necessary.

Permanent Secretary Sarah Healey writes:

Thank you for your interest in the College of Experts at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG).

MHCLG is at the heart of the government’s agenda for change, aimed at growing the economy and improving people’s lives right across the United Kingdom. We do this by empowering local communities, rebuilding local government, delivering the homes people need, ensuring building safety, enabling social cohesion and supporting local growth.

If you join us in housing, communities or local government, you will play a key role in the government’s five core missions to give the country a driving sense of purpose.

Supporting good jobs and productivity, breaking down barriers for everyone and encouraging a sense of pride in local areas runs through all MHCLG teams, whether they are tackling homelessness, unsafe tall buildings or leasehold and planning reform; supporting the spread of devolution or finding local sponsors for refugees from war.

People are at the heart of everything we do in MHCLG, and naturally we take pride in our own open and collaborative culture. We empower and enable our colleagues to deliver at their best. Central to this is our commitment to diversity, and to creating a truly inclusive working environment. Our excellent staff networks represent and advocate for the best interests of our colleagues, and play a vital role in the department’s decision-making.

We are looking for people who have the pride, passion and skills to work alongside us in making a positive difference to the lives of citizens and communities across the UK. In return, MHCLG offers you the chance to be part of the work of an exciting, fast-paced department at the heart of the government’s mission, and to make a difference to the leadership of both MHCLG and the wider Civil Service.

If this sounds like the right opportunity, we look forward to hearing from you.
