… first class CPD opportunity….suited to conservation, planning and design professionals…

Roger Higgins, Acting Chair, IHBC North Branch writes:

IHBC North is pleased to announce its Autumn full-day CPD event at Darlington’s Hopetown, an extraordinary regeneration project and part of the £35m funded linear Heritage Action Zone project (HAZ) leading up to the Stockton and Darlington Railway bicentenary celebrations in 2025.

A unique opportunity to hear about the project’s challenges, experiences and achievements from principal HAZ partners: Darlington Borough Council, National Lottery Heritage Fund, Historic England and from others closely involved, including David Coundon of Space Architects and Caroline Hardy of the Friends of Stockton and Darlington Railway.

This first class CPD opportunity is ideally suited to conservation, planning and design professionals, offering a unique insight into one of the north’s most transformational heritage-led regeneration initiatives. It will be of interest to anyone looking to expand their knowledge of urban and cultural regeneration and railway development in the north-east and will cover IHBC technical, philosophical and financial key competencies and more.

A walking tour of the site will include the restored and re-purposed Grade II* listed 1842 North Road Railway Station (formerly the Head of Steam Museum) and the 1833 Goods Shed, believed to be the second-oldest goods shed remaining in the UK; the grade II listed 1853 Carriage Works and the modern Darlington Locomotive Works. Collectively they now provide a world-class visitor attraction with ground-breaking new attractions spread over a 7.5 acre site celebrating the past, present and future of rail travel and engineering brilliance.
