RICS Land & Society Commission reports

RICS Land and Society Commission makes recommendations on how the property industry can support local communities.

The IHBC is among the wide range of bodies that contributes to the review, and it earned special mention for its contribution, reiterated by the RICS, Commission, that

‘It is also important the government makes it clear that the historic environment policies in Local Development Frameworks are included in the definition of the strategic policies of local authorities that should be respected in drawing up Neighbourhood Development Plans’

Recommendations include endorsement of the traditional service strength provided  the local authority conservation officer, highlighted in the 2006 report by Atkins on ‘Local Delivery’, as the Commission encourages the re-examination of ‘the role of local authority planning officers – recommending they move away from the town hall and into their local communities.   Through working with local people on a regular basis, they will find it easier to make informed decisions which are of long-term benefit to the community and local business.’
