RTPI consults on new membership class

The RTPI has launched a consultation on proposals to introduce a new Affiliate Membership class to complement the range of membership categories currently available, closing on 8 April.

Provisionally titled Affiliate membership the new class will:

  • Provide a membership class for those who have a personal or professional interest in planning and support the aims & objectives of the RTPI.
  • Promote planning as a profession and the role of the RTPI to a wider audience.
  • Respond to the Government’s call to widen access to professions.
  • Help deliver the Institute’s Charter obligation to advance the science and art of planning for the benefit of the public.
  • Provide the potential to increase the number of RTPI members and widen the sphere of Institute influence.

Affiliate Membership will be open to anyone with an interest in spatial planning, who is not eligible for any other membership class, providing them with an opportunity to support the aims and objectives of the Royal Town Planning Institute.  Affiliate membership will not provide recognition of professional or educational attainment.   This new membership class was approved in principle by the RTPI Board of Trustees in January 2011.

In order to protect the status of other membership classes there is a need to clearly distinguish between Affiliate membership and other membership classes, by offering no recognition of skills or professional expertise.

Although many who are attracted to this new member class may not be working in a professional planning capacity, they will still be subject to the RTPI Regulations, Code of Conduct and Byelaws.
