UK churches rethink fire safety after Notre Dame

Addressing the House of Commons… the Church of England’s representative in parliament, Caroline Spelman, stressed the importance of fire safety following the blaze at Notre Dame Cathedral last month. The Christian and Conservative MP for Meriden highlighted the importance of fire safety for historic buildings, saying they are particularly vulnerable if necessary building works are overlooked.

She said: ‘Since the Notre Dame fire, the Cathedral and Church Buildings Division has worked with the Cathedral Architects Association to ensure its records are up to date and will continue to work closely on this issue and are considering a national conference on the matter.’

It has been reported that the most likely cause of the Notre Dame fire was an electrical fault which resulted in damage to the building’s roof and spire. French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron has made promises to restore the Paris landmark within the next five years.
