Civic Voice: update

Civic Voice is the new national charity for the civic movement in England, and an update on progress is provided below.

‘We launched in April 2010 after a comprehensive debate about what the civic movement needed to build a stronger future following closure of the Civic Trust in April 2009.  We are immensely grateful to everyone who helped in these discussions. Civic Voice believes everyone has the right to live somewhere they can be proud of.  We work to make places more attractive, enjoyable and distinctive and to promote civic pride.  We speak up for hundreds of civic societies and local communities all across England.’

‘Nearly 260 civic societies have joined in our first five months, with nearly 70,000 individual members.  We are well represented in cities, suburbs, towns and villages.  Local groups pay £1.50 per member up to a maximum of £500.  There is also a growing membership of individuals (£10) and organisations, with more details on our website.  This is a strong start and key to Civic Voice gaining financial independence by having its core costs covered by membership and donations from within the civic movement.  We also receive funding from CLG, Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and English Heritage.  Our President is Griff Rhys Jones, our Chair is Paula Ridley and our Director is Tony Burton.’

‘You can keep in touch with what we do through our website (www.civicvoice.org.uk) and on twitter (@civic_voice) and through issues of civic or join us and get involved.’
