{"id":9939,"date":"2015-04-03T17:35:35","date_gmt":"2015-04-03T16:35:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=9939"},"modified":"2015-04-03T17:38:00","modified_gmt":"2015-04-03T16:38:00","slug":"ihbc-welcomes-historic-england-english-heritage-historic-environment-scotland-local-authority-conservation-in-northern-ireland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=9939","title":{"rendered":"IHBC welcomes: Historic England, English Heritage &#038; Historic Environment Scotland\u2026 &#038; local authority conservation in Northern Ireland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/NI-140515-Flyer.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-9941\" src=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/NI-140515-Flyer-300x212.png\" alt=\"NI 140515 Flyer\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" \/><\/a>In response to a substantial shift in the<\/span> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">landscape of national and local heritage management across the UK this April, the IHBC welcomes the arrival of an array of new heritage bodies:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Historic England, responsible for national regulation and guidance in England, and the new:<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u2018English Heritage\u2019, the property owning interest, both created from the demise of England\u2019s former national heritage agency, English Heritage;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Historic Environment Scotland, the consolidation of the Scottish Government\u2019s heritage agency, Historic Scotland, and Scotland&#8217;s heritage recording and information commission, RCAHMS<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Northern Ireland&#8217;s 11<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> new councils, all now with\u00a0planning and other powers critical to the management of the historic environment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>IHBC President Trefor Thorpe said: \u2018These are major changes across the sector, all of fundamental importance to our interests.\u00a0 Our own efforts in change, and our Experimental Evolution as \u2018IHBC+\u2019, suggest a little of the luxury we have in trying out arrangements before committing to them.\u00a0 These bodies, new and old, have not had that luxury, but I am sure they will do all they can to learn from the experience of others.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018And these changes, wherever they lead, highlight how the IHBC and it\u2019s members need to be ever more flexible and pro-active, so it&#8217;s all the more important that we have our own evolutionary strategies under way. With this as my last year in post, that is something in which I can take especial pride.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>IHBC Chair Mike Brown said: \u2018While these new arrangements have been long in the planning, they are still all very welcome. \u00a0The IHBC looks forward to working closely with each of the various new bodies in the furtherance of our local and national heritage right across the UK.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>IHBC Scotland Branch Chair Jane Jackson said: \u2018Historic Environment Scotland brings together two major public sector organisations, but also unites more closely two key areas of heritage practice &#8211; management and understanding. We look forward to working with the new HES and wish it well for the future.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>IHBC Northern Ireland Branch Chair Andrew McClelland said: \u2018Our Branch looks forward to working with the 11 new\u00a0councils and their conservation officers as they take charge of their new-found\u00a0responsibilities for the benefit of the local historic environment.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>IHBC Director Sean O\u2019Reilly said: \u2018These changes are a radical outcome of the recent, huge transformations in the political and economic context for heritage and its conservation.\u00a0 We must be clear too that while all know these new arrangements must work, no-one can know precisely how they will play out.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The IHBC will be supporting, helping, advising, scrutinising and marking time with the conservation impacts of all of the changes, to make sure the outcomes will be the best they can be! \u00a0So if you are interested in playing your part in this process, be sure to join in with us, and maybe even offer some of your own time as an IHBC volunteer, as well as a member, as part of our \u2018IHBC+\u2019 initiative.
