{"id":9934,"date":"2015-04-03T17:00:30","date_gmt":"2015-04-03T16:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=9934"},"modified":"2015-04-03T17:50:57","modified_gmt":"2015-04-03T16:50:57","slug":"government-architecture-portfolio-moves-to-dclg-from-dcms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=9934","title":{"rendered":"Government architecture portfolio moves to DCLG from DCMS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">In a move\u00a0presaged in recent\u00a0political\u00a0statements, England&#8217;s Government has announced the transfer of architecture policy function from the\u00a0Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) to the\u00a0Department for Communities and Local Government\u00a0(DCLG) adding weight to the the public roles of architecture, but significantly reducing the\u00a0critical mass of\u00a0heritage\u00a0interests in DCMS, a change emphasised by the re-location of the national property portfolio to the newly non-governmental organisation (NGO) English\u00a0Heritage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Design Council writes<\/span>:<br \/>\nDesign Council welcomes the transfer of architecture policy function from the\u00a0Department for Culture, Media and Sport(DCMS) to the\u00a0Department for Communities and Local Government\u00a0(DCLG) as a positive move in its mission to promote high-quality design in the built environment. DCLG will now be responsible for promoting high-quality design in the built environment.<\/p>\n<p>Clare Devine, Director of Architecture and the Built Environment at Design Council, said: \u201cThis is a practical step which we wholeheartedly welcome. Given that the department already looks after the means to deliver good quality places \u2013 the planning system, local government finance and the Community Rights programmes \u2013 it is a positive move to bring these together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the past 15 years, Design Council has worked closely with DCLG and departments across Whitehall to deliver better outcomes through the planning system.<\/p>\n<p>Devine continued: \u201cWe hope this move will mean that the delivery of high-quality places moves up the agenda across government.
