{"id":8864,"date":"2014-11-05T14:49:38","date_gmt":"2014-11-05T14:49:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=8864"},"modified":"2014-11-05T14:49:38","modified_gmt":"2014-11-05T14:49:38","slug":"dclg-right-to-build-consultation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=8864","title":{"rendered":"DCLG: &#8216;Right to build&#8217; consultation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG)has issued a new consultation on the use of \u2018right to build\u2019 approach for self builds across England, with a closing date of 19 December<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">DCLG writes<\/span>:<br \/>\nHousing and Planning Minister Brandon Lewis today (24 October 2014) announced plans to support aspiring custom and self builders who want to build their own homes.<\/p>\n<p>The minister published details of plans for a new Right to Build across, so that anyone who wants to build their own home will be able to turn to their council for help in finding a suitable plot of land.\u00a0 This comes at the same time as a government supported Private Member\u2019s Bill on plans for a Right to Build register is being taken forward through Parliament by the MP for South Norfolk Richard Bacon.<\/p>\n<p>Eleven areas are already pioneering the Right to Build scheme, developing a register of prospective custom builders in the area and matching them up to shovel ready sites.\u00a0 Mr Lewis said making custom build a more realistic option for more people was part of the government\u2019s drive to support aspiring home owners, including a new generation of custom builders who see it as an alternative to buying an existing home.<\/p>\n<p>The consultation seeks views from local planning authorities, the custom build sector and prospective custom builders about what they would like to see from the Right to Build. It looks at:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the local demand for custom build<\/li>\n<li>meeting demand on the register with available land<\/li>\n<li>how the Right to Build will work within the existing planning framework<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Planning Minister Brandon Lewis said: \u2018Custom build should not be the preserve of a select few but a realistic opportunity for anyone who wants to build their own home and that\u2019s why we\u2019re supporting this Bill.\u00a0 Eleven areas are already leading the way on the Right to Build. And our plans for this Right across England will help more people turn their ambitions into reality and clear the way for a new generation of custom builders.\u00a0 This is just one of a range of measures we\u2019re taking to help aspiring homeowners, and to get Britain building \u2013 and thanks to our efforts, house building levels are at their highest since 2007 and rising.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018House building is at the heart of the government\u2019s long-term economic plan, including supporting people to design and build their own homes \u2013 which can often be at a lower cost than buying an existing property.\u00a0 This will not be a free-for-all \u2013 those looking to build will still need to go through the normal planning application process.\u00a0 This is one of a range of measures the government has introduced to help aspiring custom and self builders.\u00a0 Others include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a \u00a3150 million investment fund to support delivery of up to 10,000 serviced plots<\/li>\n<li>making custom builders exempt from paying the community infrastructure levy and scaling back section 106 tariffs<\/li>\n<li>introducing a \u00a330 million Custom Build Homes Fund in October 2012, which has made available repayable finance for larger multi-unit projects and grant funding for community custom builders<\/li>\n<li>planning guidance that asks local planning authorities to assess the demand for custom build and plan to meet this.\u2019<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/consultations\/right-to-build-supporting-custom-and-self-build\" target=\"_blank\">UK Gov Consultation<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?s=%22self+build%22\" target=\"_blank\">IHBC newsblogs on self build<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG)has issued a new consultation on the use of \u2018right to build\u2019 approach for self builds across England, with a closing date of 19 December.
