{"id":8482,"date":"2014-09-10T15:07:40","date_gmt":"2014-09-10T14:07:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=8482"},"modified":"2014-09-09T15:42:57","modified_gmt":"2014-09-09T14:42:57","slug":"newcastle-wins-approval-for-reg-7-direction-on-to-let-signs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=8482","title":{"rendered":"Newcastle wins approval for Reg. 7 direction on \u2018to let\u2019 signs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">A regulation 7 direction has been granted to Newcastle City Council, to control the visual effect of housing \u2018to let\u2019 boards in popular residential areas<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Newcastle City Council writes<\/span>:<br \/>\nNewcastle City Council has successfully applied to the Government for a Regulation 7 direction, effectively banning lettings boards in areas of the city including Jesmond, Heaton and Sandyford. Intrusive \u2018To Let\u2019 boards that spoil popular areas will need advertisement consent from January in several neighbourhoods across Newcastle.\u00a0 Landlords and lettings agents now have three months to take down \u2018To Let\u2019 signs or face court action and fines of up to \u00a32,500.<\/p>\n<p>Cabinet member for Investment and Development Cllr Ged Bell said: \u2018The council has tried for a number of years to reduce the amount of lettings boards in certain areas of the city, even introducing a voluntary code for landlords.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Residents tell us that too many boards spoil areas and negatively affect house prices, particularly in areas like Jesmond and Sandyford that often contain student households.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We are very pleased the Planning Inspector agrees with us that we need more powers to take firmer action against landlords and letting agents who pepper our streets with these intrusive \u2018to let\u2019 boards.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018This Regulation 7 direction gives us the power to take enforcement action against a significant minority and address an issue which is a persistent concern for residents in some of our most densely populated neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We realise this is a big change for some local businesses, so we are giving them a three month window to get used to the new direction and remove any boards.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The council\u2019s new powers begin in January 2015 and will remain in place for an indefinite period of time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?s=street+clutter\" target=\"_blank\">IHBC newsblogs on street clutter<\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newcastle.gov.uk\/news-story\/new-powers-lettings-boards-city-council\" target=\"_blank\">View the press release<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A regulation 7 direction has been granted to Newcastle City Council, to control the visual effect of housing \u2018to let\u2019 boards in popular residential areas.
