{"id":8227,"date":"2014-08-06T17:13:36","date_gmt":"2014-08-06T16:13:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=8227"},"modified":"2014-08-06T17:41:13","modified_gmt":"2014-08-06T16:41:13","slug":"man-from-the-ministry-seeking-signs-of-the-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=8227","title":{"rendered":"Man from the Ministry: Seeking signs of the times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">A new Facebook Group has been established: the \u2018Ministry of Works Signage Appreciation Society\u2019, to collect photographs of the surviving signs of the Ministry\u2019s activities, including their latter day replacements<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Heritage Journal writes<\/span>:<br \/>\nBefore the days of English Heritage, Cadw and the like, many scheduled ancient monuments across the UK came under the remit and protection of \u2018the man from the ministry\u2019 \u2013 the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ministry_of_Works_(United_Kingdom)\" target=\"_blank\">Ministry of Works<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In an early version of today\u2019s ubiquitous information boards, signs were erected at many sites, giving often very brief information, but warning that the site was under protection, and that any damage would be punishable by law. These signs were often made of long-lasting cast iron, and many can still be seen today around the country.<\/p>\n<p>In a celebration of these old signs, <a href=\"http:\/\/heritageaction.wordpress.com\/2013\/04\/30\/inside-the-mind-of-sue-greaney\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sue Greaney<\/a>, an English Heritage Historian, has recently launched a new Facebook Group, the \u2018Ministry of Works Signage Appreciation Society\u2019, with a view to collecting as many photos of the surviving signs, and their latter day replacements as possible.<\/p>\n<p>The group is open for anyone to join and contribute photos or reminiscenses.
