{"id":8091,"date":"2014-07-18T16:34:38","date_gmt":"2014-07-18T15:34:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=8091"},"modified":"2014-07-18T16:34:38","modified_gmt":"2014-07-18T15:34:38","slug":"riba-report-urges-commitment-to-green-belt-building-etc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=8091","title":{"rendered":"RIBA report urges commitment to Green Belt building etc."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">A new report from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has set out a number of recommendations for the next UK Government, including building on the green belt and to end local \u2018NIMBY-fearing\u2019 planning<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The RIBA writes<\/span>:<br \/>\nA new report from The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has set out a number of recommendations for the next UK Government. RIBA\u2019s report, <em>Building Better Britain: A vision for the next Government<\/em>, calls for commitments to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Schools \u2013 faced with the greatest shortage of school places in decades, too many of the UK\u2019s schools are past their life cycle and riddled with asbestos. The current school building programme is just too cheap. We need to be spending 20% extra on the new schools we build<\/li>\n<li>Building on Green Belt \u2013 there is an urgent need to assess the real value of greenbelt to allow communities to unlock the housing and growth potential of wasted land.<\/li>\n<li>Health \u2013 the Government should commit to spending 10% of transport budgets on \u2018active travel\u2019 e.g. linear parks and protected routes for walking and cycling<\/li>\n<li>Planning \u2013 we need an end to the risk adverse, NIMBY-fearing tick-box planning system that is failing communities across the UK.
