Summer School &#8211; Orkney highlights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/ihbc.org.uk\/edinburgh2014\/images\/yacht.jpg\" alt=\"Orkney image\" width=\"292\" height=\"389\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The final instalment of the IHBC\u2019s 2014 Edinburgh School \u2018Storify\u2019 this week highlights the School\u2019s\u00a0 \u2018Orkney Opportunity\u2019, a unique and no-fee coda to the programme that was offered to School delegates by Orkney Island Council as part of its generous sponsorship of this year\u2019s examination of the art of conservation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Delegates in Orkney enjoyed the School\u2019s \u2018art\u2019-related theme, but with a localised flavour including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Neolithic archaeology<\/li>\n<li>Arts and Crafts architecture<\/li>\n<li>Designated landscapes<\/li>\n<li>Heritage economics in Stromness and Kirkwall<\/li>\n<li>Wartime murals and the heritage of conflict<\/li>\n<li>Art, poetry and writing with artists in residence and storytellers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>IHBC President Trefor Thorpe said: \u2018While, sadly, I wasn\u2019t able to attend the Orkney Opportunity, clearly it was an exceptional and busy programme that complemented well the man programme, and another unique and beautiful setting.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Even a brief scan of this wonderful \u2018Storify\u2019, created by Alison McCandlish, our NewsBlog author, shows how much so many of us missed.\u00a0 That said, it also offers us a special opportunity to participate in the experience, so it\u2019s not just about what we missed, but what we can enjoy together.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018So I\u2019d like to thank especially Stuart West and Tom Hunter of Orkney Island Council for their hard work in setting up this programme, and volunteering so much of their own time to make it work.\u00a0 This was a huge and welcome gesture, and one that represents so well the spirit of learning in the IHBC.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Describing the \u2018Storify\u2019 experience, Alison McCandlish said: \u2018The Storify brings together all the digital posts made by delegates relating to the annual school activities and allows you to see and hear a little taste of Orkney.\u00a0 And please remember too that you don\u2019t need any social media accounts \u2013 anyone can simply scroll through the webpage to read the posts in chronological order.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/storify.com\/CrenellatedArts\/ihbc-annual-school-orkney\" target=\"_blank\">Visit Storify<\/a><\/p>\n<p>View previous <a href=\"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?s=storify\" target=\"_blank\">IHBC newsblogs<\/a> on the summer school digital highlights<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The final instalment of the IHBC\u2019s 2014 Edinburgh School \u2018Storify\u2019 this week highlights the School\u2019s\u00a0 \u2018Orkney Opportunity\u2019, a unique and no-fee coda to the programme that was offered to School delegates by Orkney Island Council as part of its generous &hellip;
