{"id":807,"date":"2009-11-11T10:31:43","date_gmt":"2009-11-11T10:31:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=807"},"modified":"2010-03-24T10:32:29","modified_gmt":"2010-03-24T10:32:29","slug":"britain-from-above-aerial-photos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=807","title":{"rendered":"Britain from Above aerial photos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In May 2007 the Royal Commission on the  Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales, English Heritage and the  Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland  (RCAHMS) acquired from Blom ASA the Aerofilms Collection. This is a  UK-wide archive of over one million oblique aerial photographs, dating  from 1919 to 2006. Created by the pioneering firm Aerofilms Ltd. the  full collection of over 800,000 images is the most important archive  collection of its type and includes unique images showing the changing  face of Britain throughout the twentieth century.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\nTo improve  access to the images (80 per cent of the collection exists in negative  only), the three partner organisations are starting with a project  called Britain from Above, working towards:<br \/>\n\u00b7 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0conserving the  fragile negatives from 1919 to 1953<br \/>\n\u00b7 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0scanning them and<br \/>\n\u00b7  \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0putting them online for everyone to access and use.<\/p>\n<p>In  many cases, little information about the images exists so plans include  building a website where people and groups can share information by:<br \/>\n\u00b7  \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0identifying locations<br \/>\n\u00b7 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0naming buildings<br \/>\n\u00b7  \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0explaining images that show places which have now changed<br \/>\n\u00b7  \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0recording memories of living or working in a place.<\/p>\n<p>Achieving  this depends on successful fundraising so Britain from Above will not  start until late 2010 but a programme of community consultation has  begun.
