{"id":7655,"date":"2014-05-16T18:02:29","date_gmt":"2014-05-16T17:02:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=7655"},"modified":"2014-05-16T18:02:29","modified_gmt":"2014-05-16T17:02:29","slug":"poppies-at-the-tower-hrps-ww1-commemorations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=7655","title":{"rendered":"Poppies at the Tower \u2013 HRP\u2019s WW1 commemorations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The surroundings of the Tower of London are to be covered with ceramic poppies in a temporary spectacle of \u2018planted\u2019 poppies as the Historic Royal Palaces (HRP) marks the World War One (WW1) centenary, with the poppies to be sold later in aid of armed forces charities<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) writes<\/span>:<br \/>\nPlans to \u2018plant\u2019 888,246 ceramic poppies in the moat at the Tower of London have been announced. The poppies \u2013 one for each British and Commonwealth fatality during the First World War \u2013 will be unveiled on 5 August to mark the centenary of Britain\u2019s entry into the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Artist Paul Cummins and stage designer Tom Piper are the creative force behind the idea, which is part of Historic Royal Palaces\u2019 programme to mark the centenary.<\/p>\n<p>First World War Centenary minister, Helen Grant, said: \u2018This promises to be an impressive and eye-catching work that will, I hope, really bring home to everyone the sheer scale of the sacrifice our servicemen and women made across those dark years in our history. There will be many events and programmes across the centenary and this seems set to be one of the most memorable.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Michael Day, Chief Executive Historic Royal Palaces, said \u2018The First World War was a pivotal moment in our history, claiming the lives of over 16million people across the globe; its consequences have shaped our modern society. It is important for us to ensure that those who lived, fought and served during this time are remembered and we hope that the Tower of London\u2019s involvement during this centenary anniversary will serve as a fitting marker to those who lost their lives, whilst encouraging others to reflect on our past\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>During the First World War the Tower\u2019s moat was used to swear in over 1,600 men who had enlisted by the end of August 1914 at the recruitment station in the City to form the 10th Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers &#8211; the so called \u2018stock brokers battalion\u2019 who fought for the duration of the war.<\/p>\n<p>A programme of events will accompany the installation which will remain until 11 am on 11 November 2014.
