{"id":7597,"date":"2014-05-02T16:40:14","date_gmt":"2014-05-02T15:40:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=7597"},"modified":"2014-05-02T16:40:14","modified_gmt":"2014-05-02T15:40:14","slug":"ihbc-applauds-hlf-skills-award-to-canal-rivers-trust","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=7597","title":{"rendered":"IHBC applauds HLF Skills Award to Canal &#038; Rivers Trust"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The IHBC has welcomed the news that canal heritage has given a boost with the announcement of grant funding from the HLF Skills for the Future programme for the UK Canal and Rivers Trust Waterway Heritage Skills training project<\/span>.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The UK Canal and Rivers Trust writes<\/span>:<br \/>\nThe specialist skills used to build the nation\u2019s waterways are to be taken on by a new generation, as we\u2019ve successfully secured a major grant to train 42 new heritage workers.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a3607,000 of the overall \u00a3811,000 grant comes from the Heritage Lottery Fund \u2013 Skills for the Future programme and will be used to train recruits in lime mortaring, stonemasonry and carpentry and other heritage skills.<\/p>\n<p>The training project \u2013 called Waterway Heritage Skills &#8211; will keep the traditional techniques that were used to construct the canals and rivers across the country alive.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fourteen trainees will be recruited each year for three years, with each post lasting 12 months. They will work alongside our staff across the country on projects such as the winter stoppage programme that this year saw 141 new lock gates replaced and major work to lock chambers and masonry. Through this work current experts will pass on their\u00a0experience to the next generation of heritage workers.<\/p>\n<p>IHBC member Nigel Crowe, head of heritage at the Canal &amp; River Trust, said: \u2018For the Heritage Lottery Fund to award us such a significant amount reflects the enduring popularity and importance of our canals and rivers.
