{"id":7320,"date":"2014-03-14T18:41:19","date_gmt":"2014-03-14T18:41:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=7320"},"modified":"2014-03-15T19:07:19","modified_gmt":"2014-03-15T19:07:19","slug":"cadws-apprentices-tell-their-stories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=7320","title":{"rendered":"CADW\u2019s apprentices tell their stories"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Cadwraeth Cymru apprentices have been testing their skills using traditional repair techniques in stonemasonry and carpentry across Wales and tales of getting into traditional construction and repairing and maintaining historic monuments<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Cadw writes<\/span>:<br \/>\nUsing techniques developed thousands of years ago, having Wales\u2019s amazing heritage in your hands and cutting stone in an environment where power tools are strictly forbidden \u2014 it\u2019s all in a day\u2019s work for an apprentice with Cadw, the Welsh Government\u2019s historic environment service.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it\u2019s constructing a bridge into an ancient castle, restoring 500-year-old Tudor doors or rebuilding farm walls, everything has to be done with extreme care by Cadwraeth Cymru, Cadw\u2019s specialist conservation team which is responsible for 129 historic sites across Wales.<\/p>\n<p>The team at Cadwraeth Cymru, which translates as Conservation Wales, are well known for their skill and pride of work, and are passing these qualities down to the next generation of craftspeople through apprenticeship schemes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;I did my apprenticeship 20 years ago and a lot has changed since then,&#8217; said Gwynfor Olsen, a Conservation Work Supervisor based in north Wales.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;There\u2019s more of a philosophy behind conservation these days.
