{"id":7056,"date":"2014-01-17T19:09:44","date_gmt":"2014-01-17T19:09:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=7056"},"modified":"2014-01-17T19:09:44","modified_gmt":"2014-01-17T19:09:44","slug":"ihbc-president-welcomes-new-rtpi-president-cath-ranson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=7056","title":{"rendered":"IHBC President welcomes new RTPI President: Cath Ranson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">President of The Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC), Trefor Thorpe, has extended his congratulations and warm welcome to Cath Ranson as the new President of the RTPI.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Trefor Thorpe said: \u2018On a personal note it&#8217;s great to have another west Walian as a fellow President but from the broader perspective her field of activity in Pembrokeshire is closely aligned to our own, and I&#8217;m sure all of us in the IHBC wish her well in the future on the many matters of common interest we will share.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The RTPI writes:<\/span><br \/>\nCath Ranson\u2026 inaugurated as President of the Royal Town Planning Institute in its centenary year in central London\u2026 [has] emphasised the unique opportunity the centenary affords her Presidency and the profession: \u2018The Centenary is about our heritage and our future, spanning the serious and the celebratory. We must use the centenary, not just for our own reflection, understanding and celebration, but to raise the profile and improve public understanding of planning.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>She further outlined her aims during the year:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00b7to improve public, interdisciplinary and Government\u00a0understanding of the power of planning for good;<\/li>\n<li>\u00b7to empower the Institute by more active member engagement;<\/li>\n<li>\u00b7to reinforce the Institute\u2019s role in leading thinking and brokering dialogue;<\/li>\n<li>\u00b7to set the context for the long term vision of the profession for our second century;<\/li>\n<li>\u00b7to be proud of Planners and proud of Planning.<b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Possibly the first President to begin her inauguration in Welsh saying &#8216;Prynhawn Dda&#8217; (Good Afternoon), she praised her predecessors and in particular the outgoing President,\u00a0Dr Peter Geraghty: \u2018Peter has been an extremely popular and very effective President. We often talk, don\u2019t we, of the great pioneering Presidents of the past. Those famous names.\u00a0 The <i>cr\u00e8me-de-la-creme<\/i> of Planners. But I also think we have had some very great Presidents over the past few decades \u2013 some are here tonight &#8211; and Peter is one of these.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>And looking forward, she also welcomed the incoming Vice President, Janet Askew: \u2018I am also delighted that in Janet Askew, our newly elected vice President, we will have, for the first time ever women Presidents in consecutive years.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Cath Ranson is Development Plans and Conservation Manager for Pembrokeshire County Council, and Chair of the Special Fund Panel for Planning Summer School.\u00a0 She has an honours degree in Geology (University of Wales, Swansea), a part time postgraduate diploma in Town and Country Planning (Bristol Polytechnic) and a post-graduate certificate in Leadership for Collaboration (Bangor University).
