{"id":6393,"date":"2013-09-07T16:32:41","date_gmt":"2013-09-07T15:32:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=6393"},"modified":"2013-09-07T16:32:41","modified_gmt":"2013-09-07T15:32:41","slug":"nhig-ironwork-conservation-principles-launched","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=6393","title":{"rendered":"NHIG: Ironwork conservation principles launched"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The first comprehensive statement on \u2018Conservation Principles for Heritage Forged &amp; Cast Ironwork\u2019 has been prepared specifically for the conservation of ironwork by The National Heritage Ironwork Group (NHIG)<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The statement was formally launched at the British Artist Blacksmiths\u2019 Association (BABA) AGM, held at The Herefordshire College of Technology in Holme Lacy on 2-4 August.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The NHIG writes<\/span>:<br \/>\nThe NHIG Conservation Principles, which have been endorsed by the National Trust, English Heritage and The Ironmongers\u2019 Company, are much-needed and will provide long overdue guidance for practitioners and specifiers alike. The principles are practical in nature and have been carefully developed by the industry in order to be authoritative and widely accepted.<\/p>\n<p>It has long been felt that while conservation is important, good conservation is essential. Poor specification, tendering, ethical standards and a general lack of understanding can lead to bad or inappropriate \u2018conservation\u2019 work. NHIG\u2019s hope is that these new principles will ensure that commissions are appropriately carried out. Throughout the development process NHIG\u2019s aim has not been to invent something new, but to make universally accepted general conservation principles more relevant to ironwork and, uniquely, expand on the philosophy behind these principles in order to improve understanding.<\/p>\n<p>NHIG Standards Officer, Geoff Wallis, said \u2018The NHIG was established to define and promote best practice in the conservation of historic ironwork. Fundamental to this is the need for clearly stated and widely accepted conservation principles.
