{"id":6314,"date":"2013-08-16T17:24:11","date_gmt":"2013-08-16T16:24:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=6314"},"modified":"2013-08-16T17:24:11","modified_gmt":"2013-08-16T16:24:11","slug":"damage-to-sssi-costs-landowner-900k%e2%80%8b","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=6314","title":{"rendered":"Damage to SSSI costs landowner \u00a3900k?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Landowner Phillip Day has been fined a total of \u00a3450,000 and ordered to pay costs of \u00a3457,317 after admitting two counts of damaging a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in Cumbria<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Natural England prosecuted Mr. Day after he caused unauthorised and damaging work to be carried out on the Gelt Woods SSSI, an area of legally protected ancient woodland.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2010, trees were felled on the slopes of the SSSI and land excavated to create a significant track. These activities severely damaged the woodland ground flora.<\/p>\n<p>At Carlisle Crown Court Judge Peter Hughes QC said that Mr. Day had been \u2018grossly negligent\u2019 in relation to the works done.<\/p>\n<p>Janette Ward, Natural England\u2019s regulation director, said: \u2018We were disappointed that woodland of such ecological importance, and one that was very special to the local community, was so severely damaged.
