{"id":5796,"date":"2013-05-10T17:52:10","date_gmt":"2013-05-10T17:52:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=5796"},"modified":"2013-05-10T18:18:59","modified_gmt":"2013-05-10T18:18:59","slug":"ihbc-supports-citbs-push-to-target-maintenance-repair-avoid-recession","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=5796","title":{"rendered":"IHBC supports CITB\u2019s push to \u2018target maintenance &#038; repair\u2019 &#038; avoid recession"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The IHBC has supported the recent response by the The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) to the threats of recession as each argue that government should \u2018target maintenance and repair\u2019 to avoid recession and drive growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Speaking about the latest Office of National Statistics (ONS) figures Judy Lowe, Deputy Chairman of CITB, said: \u2018The news that Britain has narrowly avoided a triple dip recession is scant comfort to the construction industry\u2026 we now need immediate investment in repair and maintenance projects\u2026 every \u00a3100m invested in repair and maintenance takes 3,200 unemployed construction workers off Job Seekers Allowance\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>IHBC Director Se\u00e1n O\u2019Reilly said: \u2018Its great to hear CITB and ourselves pushing the same message to government, and with the statistics now available to show how maintenance is a viable growth strategy, it\u2019s an iron-clad case. Maintenance is a &#8216;shovel-ready&#8217; growth programme!\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Given the traditional construction used in many of the buildings that might be targeted, if we can all just get the right skills balance between industry and building stock, then we\u2019d save money on the Green Deal too!\u2019<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">CITB writes<\/span>:<br \/>\n\u2018The industry is in a glacial depression. With our Construction Skills Network data showing 60,000 jobs lost in 2012 and a 8 per cent drop in output, it is essential that this key driver of economic growth gets the immediate boost it needs to kick start activity.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The Government has responded positively to our industry-led Construction4Growth campaign. The pre-budget announcements on housing are welcome but we now need immediate investment in repair and maintenance projects.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The figures speak for themselves: every \u00a3100m invested in repair and maintenance takes 3,200 unemployed construction workers off Job Seekers Allowance. Plus it boosts local and national economies.
