{"id":5786,"date":"2013-05-10T17:25:10","date_gmt":"2013-05-10T17:25:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ihbconline.co.uk\/newsachive\/?p=5786"},"modified":"2013-05-10T17:25:10","modified_gmt":"2013-05-10T17:25:10","slug":"arts-council-economic-contribution-of-arts-and-culture-0-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsblogs.ihbc.org.uk\/?p=5786","title":{"rendered":"Arts Council: Economic contribution of arts and culture @0.4%!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">England\u2019s Arts Council has published an independent report, conducted by the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR), that suggests that arts and culture make up 0.4 per cent of GDP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Arts Council writes<\/span>:<br \/>\nThe report uses a methodology applied regularly by the Office for National Statistics and recognised by leading economists, and is the first comprehensive analysis to determine this value to the modern economy on a national scale.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The key findings include<\/span>:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 arts and culture make up 0.4 per cent of *GDP \u2013 a significant return on the less than 0.1 per cent of government spending invested in the sector<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 arts and culture is a sector of significant scale with a turnover of \u00a312.4 billion and a GVA** of \u00a35.9 billion in 2011<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 arts and culture generate more per pound invested than the health, wholesale and retail, and professional and business services sectors<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 the arts and culture sector provides 0.45 per cent of total UK employment and 0.48 per cent of total employment in England<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 at least \u00a3856 million per annum of spending by tourists visiting the UK can be attributed directly to arts and culture<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 the economic contribution of the arts and cultural sector has grown since 2008, despite the UK economy as a whole remaining below its output level before the global financial crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Alan Davey, Chief Executive, Arts Council England said: \u2018We fund arts and culture because it has a unique ability to fire our imaginations, to inspire and entertain us.
